Nach dem Tod ihres Mannes versucht Camille mit ihren Kindern ein unbehelligtes Leben in einem kleinen Fischerstädtchen an der Ostküste Amerikas zu führen. Aber die Einwohner machen es ihr nicht leicht, denn sie wissen um ein dunkles Geheimnis aus Camilles Vergangenheit. Als kurz nach dem Eintritt der Amerikaner in den zweiten Weltkrieg sich ein attraktiver Arzt aus Europa in der Gegend nieder lässt, ändert sich das Leben der jungen Witwe schlagartig - die beiden beginnen eine leidenschaftliche Romanze. Doch als Camille wenige Tage später zwei schiffbrüchige Deutsche aus dem Wasser zieht und bei sich zur Pflege aufnimmt, gerät das junge Glück schon bald wieder in Gefahr.
